The Katherine Bell Hale Gallery

Named for local artist and devoted History Center board member Katie Hale, the gallery is a wonderful addition to our museum offerings. A variety of exhibits curated by the History Center, or on loan from other institutions, fill the space at different intervals throughout the year. Each new exhibit is celebrated with an opening reception.

A Window on Fashion: The Evolution of Retail Around Market Square

In the Gallery November 20–April 8, 2026

Shopping has been a pastime for all our lives. But it wasn't always that way. A century ago, we owned less and we wore our clothing until the fabric wore out. How did shopping evolve into a regular pastime, expanding our wardrobe and our closets?

Market Square has borne every phase of that retail evolution since its founding. It arose as retail shopping in the suburbs at its infancy and has weathered the Great Depression, numerous recessions, and the introduction of the shopping mall. Even though internet shopping is booming nationally, Market Square is still here as our window on fashion, ever evolving with the times.

We invite you to step into a reflection on the past and how it's shaped our lives.
