Driving While Black: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights
Professor Gretchen Sorin, Director and Distinguished Professor of the Cooperstown Graduate Program, is an expert in developing exhibitions that address issues of social justice. Her 2020 book, Driving While Black: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights, which also inspired a PBS documentary, explores how the car provided a new mobility for African Americans but also brought about new challenges and dangers. Professor Sorin will speak on her work and the complex history of Black motorists – from the Green Book to unwarranted traffic stops and racial violence.
Professor Sorin's book is available for purchase at the Lake Forest Bookstore and online.
