SUMMARY:Radical Sisters: Shirley Temple Black\, Rose Kushner\, Evelyn Lauder and the Dawn of the Breast Cancer Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join the History Center for this Virtual Program with award winning author Judith Pearson \nYou don’t have to have read the book to enjoy the conversation! \nThis is a virtual\, Zoom event. Please register in advance and check your emails prior to the event for the latest information on how to join the Zoom! \nRegister Here \nThere was a time when women’s health was severely marginalized.\nThere was a time when breast cancer wasn’t discussed.\nThere was a time when October wasn’t pink. \nBut three women refused to be silenced\, their indomitable spirits igniting a movement for change. \nWhen Shirley Temple Black\, Rose Kushner\, and Evelyn Lauder were diagnosed with breast cancer\, myths\, outdated protocols and lack of awareness of their disease were rampant. Worst of all was the paltry amount of research dollars devoted to the epidemic that was killing tens of thousands each year. Meticulously researched\, Radical Sisters is a rich narrative that transports readers through three decades of a changing social landscape in America. Taking cues from the women’s health movement and the AIDS movement\, these trail‑blazing advocates did for themselves what the mainstream healthcare system refused to do. \nWith a foreword by Nancy Brinker\, founder of Susan G. Komen\, and timed for the 2025 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month\, this book acts as a mirror\, allowing readers to see reflections of themselves\, and their own experiences and struggles. It is a powerful and emotional take on the evolution of the women’s health movement (and their participation in medicine) and the breast cancer revolution. \nRadical Sisters is a groundbreaking exploration into an untold story of resilience and the fight for women’s rights. Because of Shirley\, Rose and Evelyn\, breast cancer is no longer a saga of struggling alone in the dark against a mysterious and deadly disease. The more than 300\,000 diagnosed every year stand on the shoulders of these courageous women\, today empowered to strive for their own health and that of future generations.

SUMMARY:Over There and Close to Home: Lake Forest Faces War and Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:A part of our Cornerstones of History lecture series. \nLaurie Stein\, Deputy Director and Head of Curation at the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff\, takes a close look at the community during the tumultuous years of 1916-1919. With Great Lakes Naval Station to the north and Fort Sheridan to the south\, it is no surprise that the towns of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff were highly active during America’s involvement in World War I. Close on the heels of the war was the 1918 influenza pandemic. This talk also delves into the local response to the “flu\,” drawing on newspaper articles and personal accounts. \nThank You to Our Sponsors! \nVisionary Sponsor – Maude Glore \nPatron Sponsor – Jim Phelps \nFriend of America 250 – Tom and Sally Coyle \nFriend of America 250 – Fred Jackson \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:1893 Columbian Exposition
DESCRIPTION:A part of our Cornerstones of History lecture series. \nRebecca S. Graff is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Lake Forest College (PhD and MA\, University of Chicago; BA\, University of California\, Berkeley). A historical archaeologist with research interests in the 19th- and 20th-century urban United States\, she explores the relationship between temporality and modernity\, consumerism and material culture\, and contemporary heritage and urbanism through archaeological and archival research. Her book\, Disposing of Modernity: The Archaeology of Garbage and Consumerism During Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair (2020) focused on the ephemeral “White City” and Midway Plaisance of the 1893 Chicago Fair and the modern disposal practices seen at the Louis Sullivan- and Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Charnley-Persky House. In Chicago\, Graff has also excavated the Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument (2016)\, the Gray-Cloud House (2018)\, Mecca Flats (2018)\, Armour Mission and Armour Flats (2023)\, and the Edith Farnsworth House (2021\, 2024). In 2019\, she led excavations at the former site of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on the campus of Lake Forest College. With Pauline Saliga and the Society of Architectural Historians\, Graff co-curated The City Beyond the White City: Race\, Two Chicago Homes\, and Their Neighborhoods\, 1892–2022. \nChicago’s cultural heritage scene is dominated by architectural preservation organizations that are supported by an “architourism” industry. Together they celebrate extant works by world-famous architects like Daniel Burnham\, Louis Sullivan\, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Current archaeological research in Chicago undertaken in collaboration with architects and architectural historians has demonstrated how the social histories of these celebrated structures can be illuminated\, if not outright discovered\, through archaeology. But these fragments are produced by what I term the “conspicuous disposal” of building materials–something that is only accelerated by processes of urban renewal. To understand the interaction of fragments and narratives through conspicuous disposal\, this talk draws on archaeological work on the former site of the Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and sites designed by Sullivan\, Wright\, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. \nThank You To Our Sponsors!\nVisionary Sponsor – Maude Glore  \nPatron Sponsor – Jim Phelps \nFriend of America 250 – Tom and Sally Coyle \nFriend of America 250 – Fred Jackson \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Making Lake County Home: From Homestead to Hometown
DESCRIPTION:A part of our Cornerstones of History lecture series.  \nLaurie Stein\, Deputy Director and Head of Curation at the History Center of Lake Forest–Lake Bluff\, explores the early settlement of northeastern Illinois with a focus on Lake County and the communities of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff.  \nStein examines who the region’s early homesteaders were\, what drew them here\, and how they laid the groundwork for the communities we know today. Tracing the area’s transformation from the hand-hewn log homes and roadside taverns of the 1830s to the platting of Lake Forest in 1857\, this program follows the shift from frontier settlement to planned community\, culminating in the rise of elegant estates and a new business district. \nThank You to Our Sponsors! \nVisionary Sponsor – Maude Glore\nPatron Sponsor – Jim Phelps \nFree—Suggested donation of $10.00 \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Land to Real Estate: Northeastern Illinois During the Treaty Era\, 1795-1833
DESCRIPTION:Ann Durkin Keating\, Professor of History at North Central College and author of The World of Juliette Kinzie\, examines the transition of this region from Potawatomi to U.S. control. \nKeating will explore key flashpoints including the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811)\, Fort Dearborn (1812)\, and the Black Hawk War (1832)\, tracing how a series of treaties\, from the 1795 Treaty of Greenville to the 1833 Treaty of Chicago\, converted Indigenous land into commodified real estate. Together\, these moments reveal how legal mechanisms and military force laid the groundwork for the advance of settler colonialism in the Midwest. \nIn 2026\, we honor the 250th anniversary of the United States. As part of the commemoration\, the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff is hosting a year-long lecture series that shows how our local history intersected and influenced the nation’s past. We’ll show how that history ripples through the present and arcs to our future. \nThis special 10-part lecture series will bring local and regional scholars to the History Center and will be organized chronologically\, giving attendees an overview of the major American events across the past two centuries. The series will cover pre-settlement Indigenous People’s history\, to early European arrival in the area\, local influence and experiences in the Civil War through World War II\, and culminates in a capstone community panel\, “Shaping the Next 50 Years: A Community Conversation.” \n\nCost: Free—Suggested donation of $10.00
